Cedar siding is arguably the most beautiful siding material available. It is also the one that requires the most care and maintenance. In this blog, siding and roofing contractor ReNew Home Designs shares care and maintenance tips for cedar siding.
Regular Staining or Repainting
You can choose to have your siding naturally weather and fade or have it stained or painted for a more consistent look. When choosing the latter, you will need to stick to semi-regular staining or repainting once or twice a year. Siding can be pressure-washed to remove stubborn dirt and paint particles, but make sure it is thoroughly dry before reapplying paint or stain. Be careful when using a pressure washer, however, and always use it at its lowest setting when cleaning cedar siding.
Keep the Gutters Clean
Cedar siding is vulnerable to the effects of moisture, which means you have to make sure it’s not being unnecessarily exposed to preventable sources such as overflowing gutters. Make sure the gutters are kept clean and free of leaks with biannual schedule inspections. Joints and seams should be inspected for leaks, with fresh sealant applied as needed.
Replace Cracked or Damaged Siding
Cedar siding is one of the few siding types that can be replaced individually, making it relatively easy to repair without taking out entire sections. If the existing siding has aged a bit, the new siding may stick out. This can be remedied by applying the same stain color across all siding.
Professional Cleaning and Maintenance
If you can’t commit to the maintenance level required by cedar shake, you can hire professionals to clean and maintain it for you. Often the cost of cleaning cedar siding costs less than buying your own equipment and cleaning products. Professional cedar siding cleaning is also safer if it goes all the way to upper stories; professionals have the safety equipment, as well as insurance coverage, for such risky work.
